The circular economy in the production of plant-based molecules is gaining ground around the world

February 8, 2024

Japan-based Tsuno Group Co., Ltd., recently filed a patent application for a stable formulation with a high content of ferulic acid, a natural ingredient of rare plant origin that absorbs UV rays. Ferulic acid is a polyphenol with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. Tsuno Group is a global leader in rice and bran chemistry. Its new formulation represents an alternative to the use of ethylhexyl methoxycinnate (EHMC), a petrochemical UV filter widely used in sunscreen applications, but with a negative impact on the aquatic environment according to recent studies on the subject.

Like Aplantex, another green biotechnology solution makes its mark

Same objective
Aplantex’s industrial platform uses photosynthetic plant replicators to produce a variety of molecules with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. These capture and assimilate atmospheric CO2 and their growth is enabled by light and mineral salts dissolved in water. Aplantex’s plant replicators store up to 40% of their dry weight of carbon from atmospheric CO2. They therefore represent a more environmentally responsible way to produce bioactive molecules than conventional biotechnology platforms based on microorganisms or the conventional chemical industry. They also make it possible to redirect the sugars and peptones necessary for the conventional biotechnological process toward human and animal feed. Aplantex’s industrial platform is firmly part of the circular economy through local production that significantly reduces supply chains, automation at each stage of the process, loop reuse of multiple inputs, and use of renewable energy sources.
