The birth of a promising innovation

November 15, 2022

While working on the biosynthesis of certain types of high-value plant molecules in 2019, Mourad Sabri, PhD, realized that traditional production methods could not produce plant biomass containing these molecules on a large scale. Aplantex was founded with the goal of finding a viable solution to this problem.

The novel solution would have to reflect the basic principles of the circular economy.

Ideally, the novel solution would reflect the basic principles of the circular economy.  To achieve this, the raw material would have to be produced locally, at a very competitive cost and in a way that caused no environmental damage.  Furthermore, it would have to be produced in such a way as to capture as much atmospheric CO2 as possible and use as few nutrients and as little energy as possible.  The raw material would also have to be used up in its entirety, without generating any waste. Finally, the raw material should not contain any toxins, and should ideally be food-grade.

After months of research and discussion with colleagues, chemists, geneticists and plant biologists, a solution was identified for producing a raw material that complies with the core principles of the circular economy.  That solution, now the foundation of Aplantex, can very quickly produce a large quantity of organic material generated by living organisms (biomass).  This biomass is green not only because it comes from plants, but because it is produced by absorbing 40% of its dry weight per tonne from atmospheric CO2 and by using mineral salts, water and renewable energy (hydroelectricity).

Today, our platform can produce dozens of high-value molecules that are used by top agrifood, cosmetics and biopharmaceutical companies, contributing to people’s well-being in terms of their health, beauty and diet.

Aplantex is staunchly committed to environmental responsibility – a commitment which, now more than ever, is a requirement for taking part in the nascent carbon-neutral economy, Industry 4.0, and rapidly changing logistics chains and markets.
